The Salesman's Journey
I am not a salesman.
Not that I do not want to be one. š
Itās just that Iāve only recently got started on this journey.
And the journey is taking its own course seemingly.
But first, another confession.
I used to be someone who long believed that money was inherently negative.
I associated money with selling, which is partially true. And believed that selling was, well, ābadā.
Whatās ironic is that I excelled in commerce and accounts during my school years.
For some obscure reason, I didnāt pursue this path.
It took me decades to unlearn the misconceptions I had internalized about money, selling, business, and investments.
Today, in a roundabout way, this is basically what I am pursuing!
āA man may plant a tree for a number of reasons. Perhaps he likes trees. Perhaps he wants shelter. Or perhaps he knows that someday he may need the firewood.ā
About a year ago I bought this intriguingly titled book at the local bookshop.
I took some notes.
12 Lessons From When All Else Fails, Sell:
Selling is lonely. It is tough. Your loved ones probably will not understand or even support you. Itās a lonely job.
Selling is all about character. You need to uphold your good character in unfamiliar situations, places, and with people. You are the one being sold, not the product or service.
A good salesperson has to stay positive. Avoid negative people. The biggest turnoff is negativity.
Now, I wish someone had told me this years ago. Selling can be spiritual. Yes. Donāt be greedy by trying to make the last dollar on the sale. Be generous.
Once you begin to taste success, donāt believe the hype that you are the best salesman in the world. Be humble.
When faced with challenges, be thankful. Count your blessings amidst adversity. Be grateful.
Begin with an exit plan in mind. Get out when competition intensifies. Sell your business at the opportune moment for profit, reallocating funds for other ventures.
Life encompasses more than money and business. Nurture relationships with family and friends. Stay connected, communicate, and be present. As a salesperson, you're selling your authenticity and values to those around you.
You're not alone in your endeavors. Network, learn, and lend a hand. Be generous with your time and skills, both giving and receiving help. Mentor others. Contribute to making the world a better place.
Selling is a service. Selling can be a noble career. You do not have to sacrifice your ethics, morality, or character to support yourself no matter what you believe about the business world.
The world will reward your character. Your integrity makes you valuable in society and business. You will be able to support your family. You will be able to live with dignity, respect, and a sense of purpose.
The reality is that anyone, whether just out of college or in active work, retired or starting over ā all of us have the same opportunity today, thanks to technology. Grab that opportunity. Sell your product. Sell your service. Your experience. Do it with respect for yourself or your employer, your product, and your customer.
āWe have even distorted a famous colonial praise, āJack of all tradesā to derogatorily mean āmaster of none.ā Originally, the intent was to honor a person who could meet whatever challenges arise.
For a long time, I felt inadequate because I felt I belonged to this category.
A Jack of all trades. Master of none.
I have plenty of interests. Depending on how you look at it, they can be either extraordinary or rather mundane!
But today, I realize I can put all that I know to good use.
So I began writing.
It is still a work in progress as you can see for yourself!
And the road is long.
And I am selling too.
Who said you canāt teach an old dog new tricks?
Final Thoughts & What Exactly Am I Selling?
I am peddling my thoughts, my hopes, and my dreams.
One of them is regarding health and wellness.
As I age, I notice the effects of aging on my body, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. And each of these is screaming for attention!
This is the same for many others as well I suppose.
I still believe that āalthough the journey may be downhill now, the view can still be spectacular.ā š But we may need a little bit of help getting there.
So, Iāve gone back to the time-tested traditions of using castor oil, fenugreek, and asafoetida, among others. The very same things I had discarded in my youth. Hmph.
About 18 months ago, I discovered this rather new Terahertz for Wellness therapy that I have been testing on myself. I can attest to changes for the better. The same for many others too. Regardless of age. Itās beneficial for pets too.
Itās similar to what our grandmothers and mothers used to treat us with - warm compress and therapeutic massages, etc. but in a new context using the latest technology.
