Never Underestimate The Easy Way
“Never underestimate the capacity of people to choose the easy way”
A modern fable.
Lily stared blankly at the pile of unpaid bills on her kitchen counter, a growing pit of dread forming in her stomach.
Six months ago, she had quit her tedious office job to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a chef.
At the time, she had been brimming with enthusiasm and determination to finally master the art of cuisine and open her own restaurant one day.
Now, as the stack of debt taunted her, Lily realized she had accomplished little more than cooking up half-baked excuses for squandering her days on trivial distractions instead of developing her culinary skills.
Her savings were nearly depleted thanks to her newfound talent of finding endless reasons to avoid practicing in the kitchen.
"Maybe I just don't have what it takes," she sighed, reaching for the television remote instead of her chef's knife.
Mindless reality shows were becoming her go-to solutions these days.

Just as she was getting cozy on the couch, her phone chimed with an incoming video call from her childhood friend Stan.
"Hey Lil, how's that chef dream coming along? I'm picturing you slaving over a hot stove, creating mouthwatering masterpieces as we speak," Stan said with a knowing smirk, clearly already aware of Lily's lack of progress.
Lily groaned, "You know me too well, Stan. I've been a lazy slob and blown through my savings doing absolutely nothing to further my cooking abilities.
I'm pretty much a failure at this point. I should have never left the safety of that boring desk job."
Stan firmly shook his head. "Don't you dare throw in that towel!
You know how many famous chefs started out as unmotivated slackers? You've just got to outsmart that inner voice telling you to take the easy way out."
"I wish it were that simple," Lily replied glumly.
"I've tried every productivity hack and fancy app to get me in the kitchen. Maybe the chef's life just isn't for me after all."
Stan resolved, "Well here's a thought - what if you just start by...cooking?
No apps, gimmicks, or shortcuts, just put on your apron and get chopping and sautéing."
Lily scoffed at first, but Stan's trademark blunt honesty stirred something inside her.
Her friend whom she esteemed so deeply was right - she had been overcomplicating this dream by desperately seeking loopholes and avoiding the hard, hands-on work of cooking practice.
It was time to ditch the path of least resistance.

Slowly, over the next few weeks, Lily blocked off kitchen time every morning before she could make excuses.
She learned to embrace the many mistakes, reminding herself that failure was part of the process.
By intensely focusing on becoming a skilled chef, the lures of social media and TV lost their appeal.
Three months later, Lily prepared an elaborate meal for friends and family.
She had proved she did have the drive and stamina to transform her passion into a career - it just took dismantling her lazy tendencies.
Basking in newfound confidence, Lily was radiant.
Stan's voice rang through her mind: "Never underestimate the capacity of people to choose the easy way."
She laughed, realizing how tempting that easy path of procrastination could be.
Like any dream, becoming an accomplished chef required relentless hustle, sacrifice, and pushing through the days she felt uninspired.
With her newfound culinary mastery, Lily felt ready to tackle opening her own restaurant.
She knew there would be lazy future days when she'd be tempted to slack off.
But this time, she could recognize those impulses and shove them aside to protect her momentum.
As the saying goes, no reward comes without effort.
In the end, Lily's journey proved that even those most susceptible to laziness and procrastination could still accomplish ambitious dreams.
Lily's journey showed that overcoming laziness and procrastination to achieve ambitious dreams requires self-awareness and a commitment to hard work.
By pushing through challenges and resisting the temptations to slack off, she proved that any goal is attainable with self-discipline.
Her story was a testament to the power of self-discipline in making dreams a reality.
The moral of her story?
Keep working on those grand plans - or else the only thing you'll be serving is regrets.
