What Keeps You Awake At Night?
This is one of those subjects that refuses to go away for some reason.
Like the old Willie Nelson song, “You’re always on my mind” 😁 perhaps it hits a bit close to home.
And the fact is I don’t really have any answers to the questions it raises.
Except for sharing my story.
The Things That Keep You Awake At Night
Before my retirement, I remember I would hit the sack, and before you could say “adios amigo”, I would be out like a light. Those were the good old days.
Perhaps it was exhaustion, the commuting, and long hours. Perhaps it was something else. I cannot say for sure.
But the next thing I would know would be the dawn wake-up call from the friendly neighborhood azan.
The tide has shifted rapidly in just a few years.
More often than not, I’ve found myself waking up in the middle of the night and being unable to get back to sleep.
Typically, it would be the unearthly hour of 3 a.m. - and on a few occasions, it was 3:16 exactly. Think of it what you will!
During those brief moments when I don't immediately fall back asleep, a single stray thought can disrupt my rest.
The mind races uncontrollably, veering from trivial matters to unlikely scenarios.
For parents or spouses, concerns about finances, children, health, and societal pressures often weigh heavily on the mind, likewise with me.
I found some consolation on Quora.
Looks like I was not alone:
The fear of dying an ordinary death without making a positive impact on others.
Past decisions and contemplating future choices.
Nightmares and ghosts.
Recurring themes of loss, humiliation, and loneliness.
Can humanity survive?
Homework.
PTSD.
Irrational fear.
Leaving the homework and ghost portions aside, the rest sound so eerily similar. 😅 Maybe we are united in more ways than we know!
For those who may be inclined to a little more soul-searching, here’s a provoking thought:
“What keeps you awake at night often gives your Life meaning – if you can detach yourself from the what’s-in-it-for-me question and instead ask yourself how you can create value for other fellow voyagers like you.”
For the rest, you can just copy what I do.
Watch TV. 😀
The idiot box does work its magic - makes me fall asleep in a jiffy.
The only problem is the TV happens to be in the living room. That’s a bridge too far at 3 o’clock in the wee hours, even for a sometime insomniac like me.
On the days I can’t beat ‘em, I decide to join ‘em. I start my day early.
The hour before dawn is often the quietest, with most people still asleep and minimal activity or noise. This tranquility can create a sense of peace, making it ideal for meditation, prayer, or simply soaking in the silence.
A friend of mine swears by waking up at 4 a.m. to meditate. Occasionally, I do the same when I feel inspired.
How Can I Overcome Sleep Deprivation?
It’s not rocket science and most of us would know of these tried and tested remedies already:
Establishing a consistent sleep schedule.
Creating a relaxing bedtime routine.
Optimizing the sleep environment.
Limiting exposure to electronic devices before bedtime.
Diet and exercise.
Managing stress.
Limiting alcohol and caffeine, and in extreme cases,
Seeking professional healthcare help if necessary.
Over the last 12 months or so, I’ve added a couple of other elements to the above routines:
Deep massage and foot reflexology once a week by a trained practitioner, and
Using a Terahertz Frequency therapy device on my body every night before bedtime.
The results have been, to put it mildly - extremely encouraging.
My better half knocks off almost immediately after these sessions.
On most nights - I tend not to get up at 3 a.m. anymore.
Many others who only underwent Terahertz Frequency therapy, without access to massage routines, have achieved remarkable results—some even astounding.
Today, more and more people are opting for such holistic therapies.
If you would like to know more about Terahertz Frequency Therapy, feel free to drop me a line, either by email, or in the chat box in my newsletter if you are a subscriber, or by clicking directly on any one of the following links:
I would be happy to share more with you.
Final Words
On a lighter note, as frivolous as this song may sound, John Lennon was often a philosophical songwriter, with a subdued spirituality.
I like it for many reasons, not least, the jazz-bebop flavor, and upbeat tempo.
Let off some steam here:
“When what makes other people sleep keeps you awake every night, it is a sign that you are called into the assignment of a revivalists, reformers and change agents.”
Cheers!
Till next time,
Jude
