Changing Latitudes Changing Attitudes
Lessons from Jimmy Buffet
In the world of music, there are artists who simply entertain, and then there are those who inspire us to make positive changes in our lives.
Jimmy Buffet falls into the latter category.
Sometime last Friday, I noticed the tributes pouring in from his friends, and public personalities, one of whom is the current president of the USA himself.
I first heard of Jimmy back in the late 70s on the radio - through his chart-topper “Margaritaville”.
What I didn’t know until last week was that Jimmy was not just a musician.
He was also a best-selling author, actor, and an astute businessman to boot.
His book “A Pirate Looks at Fifty” had topped the New York Times Best Seller nonfiction list.
He played the recurring role of Frank Bama the helicopter pilot in the original Hawaii 5-0 series.
He had several movie cameos - the most iconic and true to form as the Margarita Guy in Jurassic World. 😀
He co-founded the Save the Manatee Club, and
Built a diverse business empire known as "Margaritaville" that included restaurants, hotels, casinos, and merchandise.
For someone who came across as a laid-back person, he had been a pretty prolific guy.
Jimmy’s music may conjure images of swaying palm trees and sandy beaches, but it also carries a powerful message about embracing change and improving oneself.
This line “Changing Latitudes Changing Attitudes” sums it up.
“It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of our running and all of our cunning
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane ”
Released in 1977, the song captures the essence of his life philosophy.
The idea being that changing one's physical location can lead to a profound shift in one's perspective and attitude.
This philosophy remained a guiding principle that has shaped Jimmy's life and career.
What I Learnt from Jimmy
1. Embrace Change
Jimmy began his musical career in Nashville as a country singer.
It was only after relocating to Key West, Florida, that he embraced the island vibe and created the music that would define his career.
Jimmy’s willingness to adapt and pivot when circumstances change was vital to his success.
2. Tell My Story
Jimmy’s songs transport listeners to idyllic tropical settings, making them feel as if they're sipping margaritas on a beach.
Storytelling is a skill that all of us who influence the development of young minds can emulate — as parents, grandparents, teachers, educators, thought leaders, etc.
Some of the greatest teachers were also master storytellers - Jesus, Aesop, Confucius, Buddha, and Socrates.
Every face tells a story. What is yours? Who are you telling it to?
3. Know What Sets Me Apart
Jimmy's laid-back persona, adorned with Hawaiian shirts, flip-flops, and a penchant for leisurely living, has become an iconic brand.
He's not just a musician; he's a lifestyle brand.
His ability to create a brand that extends beyond his music has been a key factor in his success.
What sets you and me apart? What am I offering the world?
4. Perseverance and Resilience
Jimmy's path to success wasn't without its challenges.
He faced setbacks and rejections early in his career but persevered.
Success often requires resilience and the ability to bounce back from setbacks.
Looking back on my own journey, the many missed turns, disappointments, and obstacles remind me that those setbacks were part of the journey, not the destination. I am still standing!
5. Work-Life Balance
Jimmy's music celebrates the joys of a laid-back, carefree lifestyle.
While his songs are about escapism, his real-life approach to work-life balance is grounded.
He achieved a balance between his career and personal life, enjoying the fruits of his labor while staying true to his values.
How can I and indeed all of us, use this lesson to prioritize work-life balance and avoid burnout in pursuit of our goals?
6. Staying True to My Passion
Throughout his career, Jimmy stayed true to his love for music and storytelling.
He didn't chase trends or compromise his artistic vision to achieve success.
Staying true to one’s passion and values can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic journey, whether in music or any other aspect of life.
I'm not a great singer, and I'm only a so-so guitar player. I started running the band years ago because nobody else could, and I turned out to be good at this stuff. There's never been any grand plan to this thing. I'm making it up as I go along. Just trying to work the system while maintaining my '60s anarchic soul."
Famous Last Words
"Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes," can serve as a catalyst for self-improvement and positive transformation for anyone.
Jimmy’s life is an example of the possibilities that are out there - all that is needed is having the right attitude and fortitude to follow through.
